The game follows Roy Guarder, an inventor and philosopher who goes on an expedition to uncover the origin of life. His journey takes him to "The Cursed Lands", a dangerous and mysterious area that has been undiscovered for over 700 years.
When Roy finds what he seeks, he meets a terrible fate. He no longer becomes a living man, but enters a world filled with colors he never thought existed. This new reality forces him to balance life and death, where he sometimes has to end his own life to relive the beauty of this colorful world. But why is Roy the only one who can cross between the two worlds so easily? What has given him this unique ability?
Two Brothers offers a vast, non-linear world with multiple endings and deep sidequests. Players can take the game world from black and white 8-bit to full color 16-bit, creating a visual journey that is both nostalgic and enchanting.
One of the most innovative features in the game is the “Afterlife Hub”. When the player dies in battle or falls into a trap, they are not greeted by a familiar GAMEOVER screen, but instead transported to this colorful and mysterious place. Here they can explore, find clues and interact with characters who have passed away in the game's history, sometimes even bringing them back to life.
When the player wants to return to gameplay, they can jump from the edge of the sky and resume their adventure. This mechanic is essential, as interaction with the dead is often as important as with the living. It sometimes requires the player to deliberately end their session to cross over to the other side.
